RANK ADVANCEMENT

Procedure 4220G

RANK ADVANCEMENT

Rank advancement is granted based on the number of years of employment with the College, educational achievement, and professional experience. This advancement is strictly title-related and will not determine salary or other compensation or benefits. Only full-time faculty are eligible for rank advancement. The rank attainment procedure is as follows:

  1. All Faculty will be designated an initial rank as determined by initial placement.

  2. For the requisite years of satisfactory employment, the faculty member may be considered for an increase of one level in rank. Years in which the faculty member earns an unsatisfactory Annual Evaluation, or is on a Performance Improvement Plan, will not count toward rank advancement.

  3. Applicants for rank advancement must submit a one-page letter requesting rank advancement to their immediate supervisor by November 1st. The letter shall include a brief statement supporting their qualification for rank advancement with respect to the minimum requirements, a current copy of the applicant’s Curriculum Vitae should be provided in addition to the letter. Applicants for the rank of Professor will submit up-to­date transcripts. Those transcripts will become part of the applicant’s personnel file if rank is awarded.

  4. If a faculty member applying for Assistant Professor or Associate Professor has the requisite number of years of satisfactory evaluations the supervisor will make a recommendation to the Human Resources office for rank advancement no later than November 15th of the same year. The requestor shall not be penalized for years in which the supervisor did not perform an evaluation; such years will count as successful toward rank advancement.

  5. For faculty members applying for Professor, years of employment, educational achievement, and professional experience as outlined in the minimum requirements will be evaluated by the Educational Achievement Committee, which shall make a recommendation for advancement to Human Resources and the President by December 1st . Applicants for Rank advancement shall be notified of the President’s decision by February 15th. Rank shall be conferred immediately upon notification.

Assistant Professor

  •  Minimum education requirement and/or professional experience as outlined in the job description
  •  4 years successful employment with the College at the rank of Instructor or Visiting Instructor.

Associate Professor

  • Minimum education requirement and/or professional experience as outlined in the job description
  • 4 years successful employment with the College at the rank of Assistant Professor or Visiting Assistant Professor.

Professor

  • 5 years successful employment with the College at the rank of Associate Professor, and
  • Minimum education requirement and/or professional experience as outlined in job description plus an additional 18 credits of graduate work within the discipline, OR
  • 36 credits beyond minimum degree, OR
  • Terminal degree (e.g. Ph.D., Ed.D., M.F.A.), OR
  • 14 years professional experience in addition to the minimum job requirements, OR
  • Professional licensure and 10 years professional experience in addition to the minimum job requirements
  • Certifications commensurate with 18 credits of graduate work within the discipline or 36 credits beyond the minimum degree can be considered for rank advancement through the Educational Achievement Committee.
