Policy 5450B

COMMUNICABLE DISEASE

The College is committed to providing, to the extent possible, a healthy and safe work and learning environment for all students and provides an informational program for its College community. Communicable disease is defined as any condition which is transmitted directly or indirectly to a person from an infected person or animal through the agency of an intermediate animal, host, or vector, or through the inanimate environment and may include, but is not limited to: measles, mumps, influenza, hepatitis, HIV, AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, and infectious mononucleosis.

The College will not discriminate in enrollment or employment against any student solely on the ground that the student has a communicable disease. When there is no medical justification for restricting the access of students who have a communicable disease, they shall not be denied access to College facilities or campus activities. All medical information related to the communicable diseases of students shall be kept confidential and will not be released without specific written consent of a student unless providing such information is required by state and/or federal law.

The College will follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations and require proof of immunization records of all entering residence hall students and all international students.

The College maintains a Pandemic Response Plan as a part of the overall institutional emergency response plan. It is reviewed and updated annually.

Students in the Health Science programs are also required to follow that department policies related to immunizations and health records.

Recommended Vaccinations
It is recommended that all adults follow the Adult immunization schedule provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Exemptions
Students may request a medical or religious exemption. For a medical exemption, the student must submit a signed statement from a medical practitioner. For a religious exemption, the student must submit a signed statement declaring religious beliefs contrary to immunizations.

Should an outbreak of vaccine-preventable disease occur on campus, all students who are not certified immune shall be excluded from campus during the course of the outbreak.
