Clery Act
Choosing a postsecondary institution is a significant decision for students and their families. While academic, financial, and geographic factors are key considerations, campus safety is a critical concern. Recognizing this, Congress enacted the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 (Title II of Public Law 101-542), later renamed the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act in 1998. The Clery Act, named in memory of Jeanne Clery, a student tragically killed in her dorm room in 1986, is codified in Section 485(f) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA).
This federal law mandates that all postsecondary institutions participating in Title IV federal student aid programs must:
- Disclose Campus Crime Statistics: Provide an annual security report (ASR) containing campus crime data for the past three years.
- Share Campus Security Policies: Include procedures for reporting crimes, campus emergency response plans, and policies related to sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking.
- Issue Timely Warnings: Notify the campus community of ongoing or immediate threats.
- Maintain a Daily Crime Log: Record all reported crimes for public access.

Western Wyoming Community College (Western) publishes an Annual Security and Fire Safety Report in compliance with the Clery Act. This report includes crime statistics, campus security
