MUSTANGS L.E.A.D. is a premier student leadership development program designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders and professionals at Western Wyoming Community College. As a chapter of NSLS (National Society of Leadership and Success), and through a curriculum guided by CAS Standards (Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education) and grounded in Leadership, Excellence, Achievement, and Development, students in the program will gain the skills, confidence, and experience necessary to become effective leaders at Western and beyond.

🧭 Core Learning Objectives: This program offers a structured and rigorous leadership program that covers the following four leadership objectives:
1. Self-Awareness & Personal Growth: With an emphasis in self-discovery, this program helps students identify strengths and weaknesses, develop emotional intelligence, set meaningful goals, and build self-confidence
2. Communication & Collaboration: This program aims to enhance communication skills, including effective verbal communication, active listening, and collaboration for problem-solving and achieving shared objectives
3. Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving: This program encourages critical thinking by providing opportunities to analyze situations, explore different perspectives, and engage in collaborative problem-solving
4. Leadership & Community Engagement: Students explore leadership styles, develop social responsibility, and apply their skills through community service and mentorship, aiming to make a positive impact
🧭 Core Outcomes and Skills: Upon completion of the program, students will be expected to have developed the following leadership skills:
1. Goal Setting: Create SMART goals, set future goals related to various aspects of life, and track progress towards achieving them
2. Leadership Styles & Communication: Understand and identify different leadership and communication styles
3. Collaboration: Engage in collaborative problem-solving and work effectively in teams
4. Inclusive Leadership: Understand the importance and practice of being an inclusive leader
5. Grit, Goals, & Resilience: Explore how these qualities are integral to leadership
6. Growth Mindset & Emotional Intelligence: Apply these concepts to leadership strategies
7. Applying Leadership Strategies: Apply learned strategies and values to community-focused projects
8. Critical Analysis: Hone critical analysis skills to understand challenges
Growth and Recognition: Through this program, student leaders will be held to rigorous standards demonstrating scholarship of the required learning objectives. Those who successfully complete the program will be highlighted through awards, recognition, scholarship opportunities, and showcasing their leadership acumen to others at Western.
Peer Mentoring Program: This program encompasses a structured peer mentoring program where experienced student leaders guide new student leaders at Western focusing on leadership, academic, social, and emotional support.
Student Leaders: This program is designed to provide leadership training for students in the following student leader groups:
1. Student Government Association (SGA)
NSLS: The NSLS is the largest and only accredited student leadership honor society in the United States. Western's chapter is part of this national organization with more than 800 chapters and over two million existing members.
Students are selected based on exemplary academic achievement and leadership potential. Our chapter members will have access to:
- Over $400,000 in scholarships
- An exclusive NSLS job board
- A personalized letter of recommendation

What do I have to do to become inducted into NSLS?
The Steps to Induction take approximately 9-10 hours over the course of the semester and you can complete it at your own pace.
