Powerline Technology

Elevate Yourself. Stay Grounded. Power the World.

This program was funded through the Wyoming Innovation Partnership (WIP).

Offered exclusively at Western Wyoming Community College – Wyoming’s only Powerline program

Prepare for a high-demand, high-impact career as an electrical lineworker with Western’s Powerline Technology Program—the only program of its kind in the state of Wyoming. This hands-on program trains students for real-world fieldwork and the technical skills required to build, maintain, and repair the infrastructure that keeps the power flowing.

Employment opportunities for graduates are strong across Wyoming and beyond, with potential careers at rural electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, private utility companies, and electrical contractors.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Powerline Technology program, students will be able to:

  • Identify the parts, materials, and tools associated with powerline work, with a strong emphasis on workplace and electrical safety.
  • Install, test, troubleshoot, and maintain both overhead and underground powerline systems and equipment.
  • Apply fundamental electrical power formulas to real-world scenarios for the correct installation and maintenance of high-voltage systems.
  • Operate bucket trucks and digger derricks safely and effectively, including proper setup and use of all required safety equipment.
  • Calculate advanced electrical values such as power factor, kilovolt-amperes reactive (KVAR), and kilovolt-amperes (KVA) using industry-standard formulas.
  • Safely climb a 50-foot utility pole and demonstrate the ability to do so in under three minutes.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in tying five essential lineman knots used in fieldwork.

To graduate, students must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), reflecting the real-world requirements of the industry.
