Wyoming State Math Contest
The Wyoming State Math Contest for middle and high schools began as a small regional event at Northwest Community College in Powell, Wyoming, bringing together students who shared a curiosity for mathematics. Over the years, it has grown into a beloved statewide tradition.
Western Wyoming Community College has been the long-time host of the Southwest Region Wyoming State Math Contest. This regional contests welcomes all middle and high school students across southwest Wyoming to participate in this excting event — one that celebrates problem-solving, creative thinking, and the excitement of discovering new ideas.
Winners are recognized at each regional host site, and all regional results are combined to honor statewide achievement. Whether students are competing, collaborating, or simply exploring the joy of mathematics, this contest offers an encouraging and rewarding experience for all.
Each school can bring up to 9 students per team:
- Team A: 11th–12th grades
- Team B: 9th–10th grades
- Team C: 8th grade
- Team D: 6th–7th grades
Four Individual Tests
Each includes 10 multiple-choice problems specific to each team level. Students record answers on a Scantron form. Students are given 20 minutes per test.
One Group Test
Completed collaboratively, featuring 2 challenging problems with three-digit numerical answers. Students assigned to groups of no more than 3.
Individual Scores
- Based on the four individual tests.
- Correct answer: +20 points | Incorrect answer: –5 points
- Scores are reported to the state to compete against students from other regions.
Group Scores
- Group test scoring: Sum of positive differences between actual answers and students’ responses (lowest score is best).
Team Scores
- Team scores per class: Sum of the top three individual scores minus the lowest group score.
- No reference materials may be used.
- Calculators are allowed.
- Schools and participants must bring pencils and calculators.
