ROCK SPRINGS, WY – June 16, 2026

Western Wyoming Community College (Western) today announced a strategic update to its institutional name, transitioning to Western Wyoming College (Western).  The change is designed to better reflect the breadth and quality of the College’s academic offerings, including its growing bachelor’s degree programs, while also improving how the institution is found and recognized in today’s digital-first environment.

“This is a thoughtful, student-centered decision,” said President Dr. Kirk Young. “We are proud of our history as a community college and will continue to serve our region with the same open-access mission. At the same time, we recognize that names and how they appear online carry real weight. This update helps ensure our students and prospective students can find us easily and that our graduates are represented in the strongest possible way.”

The College emphasized that the name update is not driven by new spending and will not create additional costs for students or taxpayers. Implementation will occur gradually and responsibly, with updates made at natural reorder points for materials and signage beginning July 1. This phased approach allows the College to avoid unnecessary expenses while maintaining fiscal stewardship during a challenging budget year.

Academic operations, accreditation, and the institution’s mission will remain unchanged. Students will continue to receive the same high-quality instruction, support services, and opportunities that define the Western experience.

College leaders noted that the decision was informed by student feedback and national trends. Research and direct input from students indicated that, in some cases, the term “community college” carries unintended stigma, particularly for those pursuing bachelor’s degrees or entering competitive job markets.

In addition to addressing perceptions tied to the term “community college,” the change also responds to practical challenges in the digital landscape. The abbreviation ‘Western Wyoming Community College’ has long been associated with other institutions, most notably Walla Walla Community College, which has created confusion in web searches and online discovery. As search engines and AI-driven tools increasingly guide prospective students, this overlap has led to missed connections and misdirected inquiries. Western Wyoming College aims to strengthen its digital presence, reduce confusion, and ensure students and partners can more easily find accurate information.

The updated name will begin appearing on official materials over time, including marketing assets, signage, and digital platforms. Diplomas will reflect “Western Wyoming College” beginning school year 2026-2027. For alumni, previously issued diplomas and certificates will remain valid and unchanged to uphold accreditation standards. The College will not reissue or reprint credentials under the new name, even in the event of loss.

“We listened closely to our students,” President Dr. Kirk Young added. “They want their credentials to open doors without hesitation or misunderstanding. This change helps remove barriers, strengthens our visibility, and honors both where we’ve been and where we’re headed.”

Western Wyoming College will continue its strong partnerships with local industries, schools, and communities across the region. The institution remains committed to accessible, affordable education and workforce development that meets the needs of Wyoming and beyond. Additional information and updates will be shared with students, employees, alumni, and community partners as the transition progresses.

New logos will be shared with media outlets on July 1 and will be introduced across digital platforms, including websites and social media, thereafter. For more information about Western, please contact the Marketing & Public Relations Office at 307.382.1858 or email marketing@westernwyoming.edu.
