Mark your calendars! Western Wyoming Community College (Western) is excited to announce its 65th anniversary celebration on September 7, 2024, from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. As a cornerstone of education in Southwest Wyoming, Western has been empowering students for over six decades. In celebration of this milestone, Western invites our communities to join in on the celebration and day of fun! The day will include a roller rink, live music, pickleball and cornhole tournaments, food trucks, fireworks and more.
Those wanting to participate in the pickleball tournament will need to register by September 3, the entry fee for pickleball is $25 per person. All proceeds go toward the cost of the tournament and any additional dollars will be donated to Western Wyoming College Foundation for scholarships. Winners will receive cash prizes. All players must be eighteen years of age or older. For further information about the tournaments and to register visit westernwyoming.edu/65anniversary.
The day offers a variety of events for attendees to enjoy. Event highlights also include a neon roller rink with equipment checkout available, face painting by theater students, free use of Western’s aquatic center, carnival games, fireworks, and more. Western’s newest President Dr. Kirk Young will be serving a treat to the first 65 people in Western Commons from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Various local food trucks will be onsite for the event along with a beer garden in Western Commons for those 21 years and older. Live music will take place throughout the day with Phony Stark Industries DJing through the afternoon and Atlas Falls playing from 6:30-9:00 pm.
“We’re proud to celebrate 65 years of educational excellence,” said David Tate, Director of Community Relations. “Western has been an integral part of our communities, and we look forward to welcoming everyone to our anniversary festivities.”
Western was established in 1959 by the efforts of a citizen’s committee. In September of 1959, forty students enrolled at Western with just five full-time faculty members. In September 1964, the original district was expanded to include all of Sweetwater County, a new board of trustees elected, and the official name became Western Wyoming Community College.
Western is much different today as it marks its 65 year of being a part of Southwest Wyoming. The college is expanding with a new health science wing, has 59 full-time faculty members, offers 36 associate degree programs, 35 certificates, and a bachelor program. This past May 374 students graduated from Western, almost ten times greater than the first enrolled cohort!
