Join Western for an Afternoon of Literature and Art

Western Wyoming Community College (Western) invites the community to attend the annual Boars Tusk reading on Wednesday, May 6, at 5:15 p.m. in room 1302 by the pendulum. Created by Western students, the Boars Tusk Journal of Literary and Fine Arts features literature, art, and photography by students and residents of Sweetwater County.
Each year, prizes of $75 for first place and $30 for second place are awarded in the categories of fiction, poetry, art, and photography. Winners are chosen by the student editors, who work together to curate, design, and produce the journal. Through this process, students are given real-world experience editing, publishing, and making creative decisions that will translate to their professional artistic careers, while also giving them a chance to present their work in a public setting.
This year’s literary editor, Rah Reinholz, explains, “Boars Tusk is about amplifying the voices of the creators in our community and showing appreciation for the effort and vulnerability, it takes to share their creative spirit."
That creative spirit will be showcased as authors and artists share their work with the audience, bringing the pieces to life in a community centered space. The reading fosters connection between artists and the community, allowing the audience to experience the power, meaning, and beauty in the work. Light refreshments will also be provided.
Print copies of the 2026 issue, which includes 54 works from 27 different authors and artists, will be available at the reading, on the website, and at the information desk afterwards. To become an editor, students can enroll in the Boars Tusk class each spring; scholarships are available for positions of editor-in-chief, literary editor, and art editor, and the class counts towards the Creative Writing Certificate. Submissions are accepted year-round on the website, with selections and prize winners announced in April.
