Western Hosts the World's Largest Swimming Lesson

July 05, 2018

World's Largest Swim
World's Largest Swimming Lesson Participants

The Western Wyoming Community College Aquatic Center was one of the many hosts around the World for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) on June 21, 2018.

The 2018 WLSL event was held in 44 US States and 29 countries this year. The WWCC Aquatic Center had 97 swimmers participate in their World’s Largest Swimming Lesson Safety Day.

The WLSL event serves as a platform to help the global aquatics industry work together to build awareness about the fundamental importance of teaching children to swim to prevent drowning. Swimming is a life-saving skill for children and a vital tool to prevent drowning, the second leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for U.S. children ages 1-14. Research shows risk of drowning can be reduced by 88 percent if children participate in formal swimming lessons between the ages of 1-4.

The statistics in the United States are just as alarming. Every day, about ten people die from unintentional drowning.  Of these, two will be children aged 14 or younger.  Drowning is the second leading cause of injury death for children ages 1 to 14 years.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day 2017, at least 163 children younger than age 15 fatally drowned in swimming pools or spas, according to media reports compiled by the USA Swimming Foundation, a Pool Safely campaign partner. Of the 163 reports, 112 of the victims – nearly 70 percent – were children younger than age 5.
