Susan Heyborne was nominated as the WACCT Faculty Member of the Year!
“The Wyoming Association of Community College Trustees (WACCT) is part of the American Community College Trustee (ACCT) network – a non-profit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical, and junior colleges in the United States and beyond. Here in Wyoming, WACCT educates community leaders, policymakers, and technical college trustees through annual conferences focused on leadership development and advocacy, as well as through publications and online and face-to-face institutes and seminars.” – WACCT website homepage.
Susan fell in love with mathematics in a junior high school math class in Evanston, Wyoming. From that moment on, she knew she would pursue a career in math. She and her husband graduated from the University of Wyoming and subsequently moved to Rock Springs. After many failed attempts at securing a math teaching position at Western, her perseverance finally paid off. She was taken on with the understanding that she’d complete her master’s degree in mathematics within five years, and that’s exactly what she did.
Susan is passionate about her students, about teaching, and she has a genuine love for her field. She has been teaching more than 20 credit hours this semester, and consistently goes above and beyond to inspire students not just at the college, but by also focusing on motivating high school students through her Calculus 2 course.
Susan Heyborne has touched the lives of thousands of math students, whether it’s helping people in a remedial course get to the college level, and finally understand mathematics, or students who share her passion for numbers and linear algebra. Western is fortunate to have an inspirational teacher like Susan on campus, and we will all be sad to see her retire in 2018.
Congratulate Susan when you see her on campus, and wish her well in her future endeavors.
