August 25, 2015

Race on the Rock is
Race on the Rock is this Saturday at the Rock Springs campus!

ROCK SPRINGS – Western Wyoming Community College will host the “Race on the Rock” Triathlon at the Rock Springs campus this Saturday beginning at 4 a.m. The event is sponsored in cooperation with USA Triathlon Rocky Mountain Region and is part of the Rocky Mountain Region Talent ID Series. It is the campus’s second year hosting the race, though this will be its first year as an official Talent ID event.

Race on the Rock is open to all competitors and registration for the race is still open. The day’s complete (though tentative) schedule is included below.

There are several pre-race events scheduled for this week, including free clinics for runners and cyclists. Volunteers to help staff the race are also welcome.

The final registration table will open at 4 a.m. at Western. Most race activities should be concluded in time for the awards ceremony at approximately 10 a.m. Food will be available for competitors and volunteers after 8 a.m. Music and entertainment will also be provided until approximately 11:30 a.m.

The Rocky Mountain Region Talent ID Series is designed to foster the development of young athletes ages 13 - 19. The series aims to encourage participation for young athletes, foster excitement about competing in the Rocky Mountain Region, and ultimately serve as a pipeline for future Olympic contenders. Western’s race is one of only four Talent ID races to occur in the Rocky Mountain Region this year.

The Rocky Mountain Region Talent ID Series is open to all athletes between the “race ages” of 13 and 19. “Race age” refers to the athlete’s age on Dec. 31, 2015. The Youth division features competitors with race ages of 13 - 15. The Junior division features competitors with race ages of 16 - 19. Competitors for the Talent ID Series Race will begin the swim portion of the event at 9 a.m.

The Race on the Rock Triathlon will take place on the Western campus and the surrounding city streets, and is open to all competitors. This fun, family-friendly event is a USA Triathlon Sanctioned Race. It is one of the highest-altitude races in the country, which adds an extra level of difficulty to the endeavor. More information about Race on the Rock is available at http://www.raceontherock.weebly.com.

Western is pleased to host Race on the Rock for the second year and is especially pleased that it has been designated as a Talent ID Series event. For more information about Race on the Rock, contact Race Director Traci Ciepiela at (307) 922-1840 or email her at tciepiela@westernwyoming.edu.
