WHAT TO EXPECT ON MOVE-IN DAY

Incoming freshmen are encouraged to connect with their future roommates and learn about the WELCOME activities that will be going on here at Western on the first day.
The first day of college move-ins can be very emotional. Whether it's because you are leaving family and friends back in your hometown, or simply because you don't know what to expect. Here at Western, the faculty try to make the transition as smooth as possible. Students are encouraged to attend orientation and other events that are going on to initiate the start of a new college beginning. My top tip for incoming freshmen is to attend the ‘find your classroom’ the night before school starts. Knowing the layout of campus really relieved a lot of stress for me, as it helped me know where all of my classes were going to be. Here are some additional tips you can do before moving in.
STEPS TO PREPARE FOR MOVE-IN DAY:
PACK AHEAD OF TIME
Students typically can move in before classes begin to get fully situated. Dorm rooms are furnished with a few things to begin with, students are responsible for all other items such as bedding, decor, clothes etc. The perk of being from a state nearby is that you can take clothes back and forth depending on the clothes you made need for the season. However, if for any reason you need any last-minute items/clothing, there is a Walmart right down the street.
CONNECT WITH YOUR ROOMATE, EARLY
On the Housing form there is a section to provide your phone number, it's optional, but I highly recommend it. Being able to get in contact with your roommate ahead of time will help make you feel more relaxed. You will be able to get to know them a little more before you meet in person, helping to relieve any nervousness. You and your roommate will also be able to plan accordingly to collaborate on any decor for the dorm.
BE PREPARED
Whether you are learning how to budget money, or trying to learn your mom’s casserole recipe it’s important to prepare yourself. Learning how to cook simple meals, doing laundry, and learning how to budget money will help set you up for success here at Western.
Overall, remember that being nervous is 100% normal on the first day of college, however, hopefully these tips help you feel a little more prepared. Goodluck!
