The Wellness Challenge is hosted by the Exercise Science Practicum students every Spring. It is a twelve week fitness program designed to help community members progress toward their fitness and wellness goals. Pre and post fitness testing is performed to measure participant improvements.
For the 2021 Wellness Challenge, we will be making a few changes to the fitness tests. There are four fitness tests and they include:
- Cardiovascular - 1 mile walk test will be used to calculate your cardiovascular fitness
- Grip Strength - a simple "hand squeeze" will be used to calculate your upper body strength
- Flexibility - modified sit and reach will be used to measure your flexibility
- Muscular Endurance - full body plank to measure muscular endurance
The body composition testing will no longer be part of the general fitness testing of the Wellness Challenge. If you would like to have your body composition evaluated by the non-invasive bioimpedance analysis or by skinfold testing, our exercise science students can conduct this for an additional charge of $5 per test.
Registration is by appointment only. Please use the following link to signup for a time slot for Pre-testing at the end of February. Register Here
Please contact Kristine Clark firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions you might have or help signing up for pre-testing.
The Exercise Science students are available to assist in setting realistic exercise goals - all information is kept confidential.
Those who participate in the Wellness Challenge, can attend FREE workout nights hosted by the Exercise Science students every Tuesday 5:30-7:30 pm in the Fitness Center. This year due to COVID restrictions, workout nights will only be offered on Tuesdays and participants must adhere to campus restrictions including wearing a mask at all times while using the facility, maintaining appropriate distance and cleaning the equipment after use. In addition, the number of participants will be limited, so there will be a sign up sheet available each week for use of the Cardio and Weights as well as the Fitness Class.
During the workout nights, Wellness Challenge participants have access to the cardio and weight rooms. The Exercise Science students are available to answer questions and demonstrate how to use the cardio machines, weight machines, and other equipment. In addition, a formal group fitness class are also held for about 45-60 minutes during the workout night. These classes may include stability ball, step, cardio dance, mind-body class, spin class, to name a few.
You can participate as an individual, as a team or with your family. The Challenge is open to anyone six and older. Children 6-14 can participate in the fitness classes offered during the free workout nights under the supervision of their parent/guardian. Children 14 and older will be allowed to use the equipment in the Fitness Center with their parent/guardian.
Participants are asked to come prepared with a physician's release for physical activity should they have any cardio, pulmonary, metabolic, or joint issues. Pretesting cannot begin until this is provided.
The registration fee is $5 for each individual (whether participating on their own or with a group). The fee for a Family is $15 ($5 for each parent and $5 for their children). The fee is collected at the time of Registration at the beginning of the Challenge. Prizes throughout the challenge and at the conclusion are provided by Western and local businesses.
Western will follow local, state, and national health directives regarding COVID-19 as they pertain to events. All on-campus events are subject to space capacities, mitigation protocols, or possible cancellation due to COVID-19.
