Language

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world. In the United States there are more than forty million Spanish speakers. This number is expected to grow rapidly over the next few decades. In this environment, knowledge of Spanish will be useful in virtually any career.

The Spanish program at Western gives students a solid foundation in the fundamentals of spoken and written Spanish. As the emphasis of the program is on communication in the target language, students learn to read, write, speak, and understand spoken Spanish on a variety of everyday topics such as food, family, classes, and common daily activities. The students are also introduced to the various and diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. The A.A. in Spanish prepares students to immediately begin advanced study in Spanish language, literature, and/or linguistics at the university level, or to study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country.

In addition to careers in interpretation, translation, and teaching, many companies and government agencies are looking for employees with Spanish language skills. Graduates of our program will therefore have an advantage in virtually any field of employment, and transfer students will be close to finishing a major or minor in Spanish at the university.
