Future educator Kasandra Silva shares how Western’s Preschool Development and Entrepreneurship Certificate is helping her
build a strong foundation for a career in early childhood education. In this interview
with student editor Jasmine Ramirez, Kasandra talks about her inspiration, biggest
challenges, and advice for others considering the program.
What made you want to pursue this certificate?
Dr. Maddy informed me of the certificate and encouraged me to pursue it, as it would
be beneficial in my career in Early Elementary Education.
Do you have previous experience working with children?
Before this semester, I had no experience working with children in an organized setting.
What's the most valuable lesson you have learned so far in this program?
The most valuable lesson I have learned in this program is the importance of early
childhood education. These are the most formative years for children, and it is crucial
to set the foundation for them to learn and grow.
What is your vision after you complete the program?
After finishing this program, I intend to pursue a career in Early Elementary Education.
I will enroll at VCSU in the spring to earn my bachelor's degree in Early Elementary
Education, striving to become an elementary school teacher.
What's been the most challenging part of the program?
So far, the most challenging part of the program has been the business courses. I
think this is because it's something new to me. Although it has been difficult, it
has pushed me to think outside the box and practice "real-world" application of these
subjects.
What would you say to others who are thinking about joining the program?
Just go for it! You won't regret broadening your knowledge and preparing yourself
better for something you're passionate about!
