Wrapping Up College Life

Seven young adults are walking away from the camera, their arms around each other's shoulders, in what appears to be a moment of celebration at a school or college. They are walking on a paved path and holding books and backpacks. The sun is shining.

The last few weeks of college can feel different, it’s like we’re almost to the finish line, but yet we are still being pulled back. When our first day of college started many of us can say we were nervous, our hearts were beating faster than ever. However, towards the end, we started to notice the things that we once overlooked. Having routines and schedules that were one stressful now feel calm. Everything comes more natural now like speaking to our instructors, hanging out with our friends, or even doing things that we once never even imagined of doing. This mindset comes naturally as we get closer to the end.

The pressure of finishing strong can be hard, with finals coming up we are so determined to push through that our thoughts can also take over. However, as strange as this sounds, I recommend you to take these last few weeks in and cherish every second. The last few weeks of college are not only about getting to he finish line but about being able to fully live through the final moments of it. Whether you are planning to continue your education after Western, or just trying to see where the wind takes you, try to slow down and enjoy the ending of the ride.

Instead of rushing, it’s important to remember to slow down every once in a while. This may mean, spending more quality time with your friends, enjoying the classrooms that you typically don’t go into, or simply try to enjoy the study sessions with your classmates. When you start to switch your mindset from feeling stressed to realizing that there is an ending, you start to really enjoy every second.

Life is always about moving quickly, about what is next like graduation, starting that new internship, or even moving to a new place. However, we tend to forget as humans that we should live in the present moment and not always think ahead. when we are constantly thinking ahead, we can miss the things that are in front of us. What feels like a dreadful week can one day have you looking back and realizing that it was your last week here at Western, which is time you’ll never get back.

So I encourage you as you are finishing your last year here at Western, to try to stay present. We tend to want everything to be perfect, that is not always the case. By being able to appreciate the present moment that is more than enough. One day you’ll look back at the time you had at Western and realize that it was a big chapter in your life that came to an end.

One day when you are sitting at your future job or wherever you may be in life, you won’t remember all the assignments and exams that you had; you remember the friends you made, the late night laughs, and the routines that you had that might’ve felt small, but in the end made you who you are.
