Many people do exciting activities on St. Patrick’s Day without really knowing what this holiday is about. St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17, every year. It’s a holiday that comes from the Irish but has become a celebration worldwide. This holiday is called St. Patrick’s Day because it honors Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. He is honored for advocating to bring Christianity into Ireland. A lot of the symbols and colors used around the time of St. Patrick’s Day have a deeper meaning than we think. For example, to many, a shamrock or three-leaf clover is just a symbol of good luck and celebration. It is believed that Saint Patrick used the shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity, which is a big concept in the Christian church.

While this tradition began in Ireland and was a big feast day, it became a big tradition in the United States when Irish immigrants brought their celebrations across the seas. There are many cities in the United States that make big gestures to show their support of this Irish holiday. For example, one of the most common gestures a city does is Chicago dyeing its river green each year. Many people travel to Chicago during this time to see this take place.

College students also like to participate in this holiday. This can mean a variety of different things for everyone. For a lot of people, it is a time to be around those that you can have fun with. It’s no secret that St. Patrick’s Day can be tied to drinking alcohol. There can be pressure to drink on this day, but it’s important to realize that there are safer ways to celebrate.

One of the things that you could do to participate and still have fun during this holiday is host a green-themed game night. Grab all of your friends and have everyone wear green. Play board games that originated in Ireland and simply enjoy each other’s presence. Another way that you could enjoy this holiday is to try Irish-inspired foods like shepherd’s pie. You and a group of friends can go to a restaurant to try this or simply get the ingredients and make it at home.

Regardless of what you do, St. Patrick’s Day is about coming together and having a fun time. Whether you’re celebrating it for the Irish traditions or simply enjoying a good night with your friends, it’s important to make safe decisions.
