How to Western
My name is Leila Sophia Olivas, a student ambassador at Western. This is my first semester here and I’m still adapting to the new environment and getting used to college life. As part of our “How to Western” series I want to give you all some of the tips I wish I knew for my first few weeks of college.
The first week of school can be both fun and scary. During my first week I was able to make some amazing friends right from move in day. A tip for making more friends is by going to the many events Western hosts. During welcome week they had fun little events everyday that are great for meeting new people. I went to the Casino Night where everyone played card games all night. Another great event was the foam dance which was also super fun. Western hosts these events so students can go and make new friends plus have lots of fun. They are especially great if you are shy because they help get you out of your comfort zone and have fun.
On the academic side I would recommend creating a schedule and using a calendar to keep track of all your assignments. I try to do my assignments a few days before they are due in order to stay ahead of what is happening in class. I also like to color code my notes to keep track of important vocab words and remember key information from the lecture that day.
If you live on campus it's great to communicate with your roommates. I found it helpful to have a schedule with them for even simple things like showering. This way if someone has a really early class you aren’t holding them back. A routine is a great way to keep yourself on track. It is good to always be respectful of your roommates. I also found it helpful to have a routine for keeping the room clean. Me and my roommate like to have one day a week where we spend a day cleaning the room and doing laundry.
