All ten of Western’s wrestling team qualified for nationals at the competition.
Western Wyoming Community College’s wrestling team took first in the Region IX Championship held at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado on February 16th, 2019.
Four teams representing Region IX competed and Western came out on top. The regional championship was a stepping stone for wrestlers to qualify for nationals. All ten of Western’s wrestlers qualified this year – the first time in Western’s history the entire team has achieved that goal. The team’s efforts are seen on the mat as well as in their schoolwork. Western’s athletic motto is “Good people, good students, good athletes – in that order,” and the wrestlers embody it. The team heading to nationals has a 3.16 GPA.
The following Western wrestlers will be heading to nationals; Dalton Stutzman, Joey Revelli, Kyle Evans, Jake Thompson, Samuel Freeman, Wyatt Monroe, Jace Anderson, Jared Bird, Connor Kirkland, and Landon Brown.
“I am very proud of this team. We have found out a lot about ourselves through the season, primarily through setbacks. We are gritty and achievers; I admire the resilience of these guys. We won back to back region titles this year. We set a record of qualifying all 10 guys to nationals and 7 of them are freshmen, another school record. I am excited to see what we can do in Iowa!” stated Art Castillo, Head Wrestling Coach at Western, “Thanks for the support of our administration, faculty, staff and fans throughout the season. We couldn’t do it without you all.”
The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship will take place in Council Bluffs, Iowa on March 1st and 2nd at the Mid-America Center.
