Western to host Southwest Regional Science Fair on Thursday, Feb. 2

Colorful chemicals, beakers and test tubes are hallmarks of traditional scientific research, but many other disciplines are represented at the SW Regional Science Fair.

Western Wyoming Community College will host the Southwest Regional Science Fair on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. in Rushmore Gymnasium. Students from across southwest Wyoming will show off their science smarts by designing and carrying out innovative science projects, and then presenting their methodologies and results at Western on Feb. 2.

Competitors will be divided into two divisions: the Junior Division, for students in grades six through eight, and the Senior Division, for students in grades nine through 12. Projects are judged on such categories as Scientific Thought, Engineering Goals, Thoroughness, Skill, and Clarity.  

Category descriptions for the competition include: Animal Sciences; Behavioral & Social Sciences; Biochemistry/Cellular & Molecular Biology/Bioinformatics & Computational Biology; Biomedical & Health Sciences; Chemistry; Earth & Environmental Sciences; Energy & Transportation; Engineering Design & Innovation; Environmental Management; Materials & Consumer Sciences; Microbiology; Physics/Astronomy/Planetary Sciences; Plant Sciences; and Robotics/Computer/Mathematical Sciences.

The Southwest Regional Science Fair welcomes the community to drop by and check out the many complex and ingenious student projects on display at Western on Feb. 2. Judging will take place from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., and the awards ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. in Rushmore Gymnasium.
