Volleyball, wrestling and men's basketball all in action at home this week

October 26, 2016

Mustang wrestlers wi
Mustang wrestlers will see their first live competition of the season on Friday, Oct. 28, in the annual intrasquad dual.

October is the busy season for Mustang Athletics, and this week features three teams in action at home.

On Thursday night at 7 p.m., Mustang Volleyball will conclude the home season and regular season with a Sophomore Night match against Casper College. The team will honor Western sophomores Peyton Lish, Karley Tepoerava DeMello and Alyssa Coe before the game.

The Mustangs play their final road match Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. versus Central Wyoming College in Riverton. They return to Riverton Nov. 2 to begin Region IX Tournament play.

Mustang Wrestling unofficially opens competition on Friday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. in Rushmore Gymnasium with an intrasquad dual featuring 13 individual matches. The Mustangs will welcome a special guest for that night’s action: UFC welterweight Neil Magny will attend the dual and will be available for photos and autographs from 6:30 – 7 p.m. and again from 8:30 – 9 p.m. (Times may vary slightly depending on start and end times for the dual.)

Magny, who is the UFC’s ninth-ranked welterweight, will attend with his coach, Leister Bowling. Bowling is a former college roommate of Mustang Head Coach Art Castillo. Castillo served as an assistant coach in Magny’s corner of the Octagon during a UFC fight in Las Vegas in March 2016. Magny, who is 18-6, will face former UFC welterweight champion Johnny Hendricks at UFC 207 in December.

On Saturday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m., Mustang Men’s Basketball will take the floor in Rushmore Gymnasium for their annual Alumni Scrimmage, the team’s first competitive action at home this season. The Mustangs have already scrimmaged on the road at the Laramie County Community College Jamboree and the Salt Lake Community College Jamboree.

This year’s Alumni Scrimmage was rescheduled from its previously announced start time of 7 p.m. to a 3 p.m. tip-off.

The men’s season begins for real Thursday, Nov. 3, on the road at the Las Vegas Tip-Off Invitational. On Friday, Nov. 11, they travel to Powell for the two-day First Bank of Wyoming Classic. The first regular-season home game for Men’s Basketball is set for Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 5:30 p.m. versus Colorado Northwestern Community College.

Mustang Women’s Basketball is not in action this week but will open the season at home with the Mustang Invitational Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 3 – Saturday, Nov. 5. Game times are 7 p.m. versus the Utah All-Stars, 7 p.m. versus Snow College, and 5 p.m. versus Colorado Northwestern Community College.
