ROCK SPRINGS – Western Wyoming Community College hosted the Sweetwater County Spelling Bee on Friday, and sixth-grade Eastside student Skyler Allyn walked away with it.
Allyn earned the top sixth-grade spelling trophy and the first-place overall trophy at Friday’s annual contest. His twin victories also netted him cash awards, gift bags, and a one-year scholarship to attend Western.
Skyler’s school also came out tops among those competing. Eastside won the “traveling” trophy for 2015. If a school wins the trophy for three consecutive years, that trophy will remain with the school. Last year, Lincoln Middle School won the county bee for the third straight year.
Also receiving trophies Friday were two Lincoln Middle School students: in second place, seventh-grader Hunter Schrantz, and in third place, eighth-grader T.J. Hester. The Rocket-Miner provided cash awards for the top three finishers and all received gift bags.
These winning students will have an opportunity to compete in the Wyoming State Spelling Bee, which will be held on Saturday, March 21, at Western’s Rock Springs campus.
