Take the Wellness Challenge from January thru April every year!

The Wellness Challenge is hosted by the Exercise Science Practicum students every Spring.  It is a twelve week fitness program designed to help community members progress toward their fitness and wellness goals.  Pre and post fitness testing is performed to measure participant improvements.

There are four fitness tests and they include:

  • Cardiorespiratory - 1 mile walk test will be used to assess your cardiorespiratory fitness
  • Grip Strength - a simple "hand squeeze" will be used as an assessment of upper body strength
  • Flexibility -  modified sit and reach will be used as one assessment of flexibility
  • Muscular Endurance - full body plank as one assessment of muscular endurance

Additional Tests for a fee:

  • Body Composition can be assessed by the non-invasive bioimpedance analysis (best completed in the morning by appointment) or by skinfold testing - $5 per test.
  • Resting Metabolic Rate. Requires an early morning appointment and preparation of an overnight fast.  The test takes about 30 minutes to complete.  $75 (these funds go directly to supporting students to travel to conferences to present original research)

The Exercise Science students are available to assist in setting realistic exercise goals - all information is kept confidential.

Those who participate in the Wellness Challenge, can attend FREE workout nights hosted by the Exercise Science students every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7:30 pm in the Fitness Center.

During the workout nights, Wellness Challenge participants have access to the cardio and weight rooms of the Fitness Center.  The Exercise Science students are available to answer questions and demonstrate how to use the cardio machines, weight machines, and other equipment.  In addition, a formal group fitness class is also held for about 45-60 minutes during the workout night.  These classes may include stability ball, step, cardio dance, mind-body class, spin class, to name a few.

You can participate as an individual, as a team or with your family.  The Challenge is open to anyone six and older.  Children 6-14 can participate in the fitness classes offered during the free workout nights under the supervision of their parent/guardian.  Children 14 and older will be allowed to use the equipment in the Fitness Center with their parent/guardian.

Participants are asked to come prepared with a physician's release for physical activity should they have any cardio, pulmonary, metabolic, or joint issues.  Pretesting cannot begin until this is provided.

The registration fee is $5 for each individual (whether participating on their own or with a group). The fee for a Family is $15 ($5 for each parent and $5 for their children). The fee is collected at the time of Registration at the beginning of the Challenge.  Prizes throughout the challenge and at the conclusion are provided by Western and local businesses.

Western will follow local, state, and national health directives regarding COVID-19 as they pertain to events. All on-campus events are subject to space capacities, mitigation protocols, or possible cancellation due to COVID-19.
